Kaboom Collective and Mourning [A] BLKstar Unveil Dynamic Collaboration: A Fusion of Sonic Brilliance and Afrofuturist Soul

April 1, 2024 — In an unprecedented union of musical genres, Kaboom Collective and Mourning [A] BLKstar proudly announce their forthcoming collaboration, set to captivate audiences with a live performance in Spring 2024. This groundbreaking partnership promises to transcend boundaries and redefine the possibilities of contemporary music.

Kaboom Collective, renowned for pushing artistic boundaries and challenging conventional educational norms, is excited to join forces with Mourning [A] BLKstar, a trailblazing Afrofuturist soul collective, to create a unique musical experience that will resonate with audiences across the globe.

The collaboration will see the convergence of Kaboom Studio Orchestra’s orchestral prowess with the soulful and genre-defying sound of Mourning [A] BLKstar. Audiences can expect orchestrated renditions of popular Mourning [A] BLKstar tunes, beautifully reimagined to showcase the rich tapestry of both ensembles.

Theresa May, member of Mourning [A] BLKstar and a brass coach at Kaboom Collective says, “The talent, enthusiasm and creativity in each collective is inspiring and I am excited to bring these two worlds together for an ultimate collaborative experience.”

The highlight of this collaboration will be a riveting live performance, scheduled for May 31, 2024, where the Kaboom Studio Orchestra and Mourning [A] BLKstar will share the stage in a seamless fusion of classical and afro-centric funk elements. This promises to be a once-in-a-lifetime experience for music enthusiasts and aficionados alike.

RA Washington, member of Mourning [A] BLKstar adds, “It’s been a secret fantasy amongst us to play our music with an orchestra. That fact alone makes this exciting but what makes this beyond exciting is the fact that this is an orchestra of young people, and being in collaboration with the future is really the spirit of our collective. I don’t think there are many bands playing with orchestras that sound like us and whose music holds the message our music does.”

Adding another layer of creativity to the performance, the collaboration will feature talented dance students from the Cleveland area adding visual spectacle through captivating dance performances.

“This collaboration is a testament to the power of music in bringing diverse communities together,” says Liza Grossman, Co-Founder, Creative Director, and Conductor of Kaboom Collective. “Cleveland will get to experience Kaboom live —it’s grown up, cutting edge, and made for now. It’s wildly different from any show I’ve conducted in the past and I’m excited for people to see and hear what we’ve been up to.”

The show will be recorded for a live studio album and captured on film for a special documentary project. Tickets for this extraordinary event will be available starting March 2024 at kaboomcollective.org.
